Rosanjin - January's study meeting

Greetings!

This is Mia reporting on Rokurunkai's study meeting that took place yesterday.

Yesterday's topic was presented by our group leader Ryotaro about the renowned calligrapher, ceramicist and restaurateur - Kitaoji Rosanjin.

Rosanjin's life was filled with many statements and anecdotes that highlighted his passion for the arts.

Before I had the chance to participate in this study meeting, I thought of Rosanjin as just another artist who was obsessed with the arts. However, upon observing the presentation held yesterday, I believe he exceeded my expectations.

He was an individual who pushed the boundaries with his actions and statements that often hit the raw nerves of others. He was always honest about his opinion of cultural figures and the arts.

One story that illustrated this very well is a letter he had once sent to Muneyoshi Yanagi - the leader of the Mingei Art Movement. Yanagi was adamant that his own writing was an innocent, folkish art. Rosanjin made it clear in his letter to Yanagi that he thought Yanagi's writing was nothing of any value.

Rosanjin always pursued every available avenue in order to gain an understanding of valuable art and why it was so valuable. Although he may have offended people like Yanagi with his statements and opinions, it was with this almost brutal honesty that allowed him to elicit debate and discussion over what was good art.

I believe that it's not only about feeling the beauty of the art we are admiring, but also having our own criterion for judging that art in order to understand it in more depth. It can be most difficult to acquire such abilities, but it is also a great opportunity to heighten our senses. Our ability to see... to touch... to use what is before us with more clarity.

The presentation I attended yesterday by Ryotaro on Rosanjin was a great insight into thinking and gave me more inspiration to visit exhibitions and to study further independently to develop the kinds of insights that Rosanjin spent his entire life striving to achieve.

Thank you for reading my review!!
